Electronic post-hardcore band DIVIDE from Jakarta will be coming to Kuala Lumpur soon, on their THIS IS NOT A HEADLINE tour, organised by Peter Says Denim Malaysia, in collaboration with An Honest Mistake Records and The Linch Agency. Since this is the band’s first visit to Malaysia, we decided to get the introductions rolling.

DIVIDE’s gig poster: click for more details. Band members from l-r: Nicko, Fikrie, Dhenaldi, Bolo, Willfred and Danindra

So, who’s in the band, and how did you guys get together to form DIVIDE?

Dani: Hi my name is Danindra, you can call me Dani. I do guitar and clean vocals for DIVIDE.

Dhenaldi: My name is Dhenaldi and I do scream vocals for DIVIDE

Fikrie: My name is Fikrie and I play keys and synth. Since our original guitarist Bolo is studying overseas, I replaced him and play lead guitar.

Willfred: My name is Willfred, I do bass.

Nicko: My name is Nicko and I play drums for DIVIDE.

Dani: All of us were highschool friends. We went to the same highschool and the band itself was Dhenaldi’s idea to create a post-hardcore band, which was hard to find in early 2009. He rounded up the boys and we played our very first gig on the 23rd of January 2010. The date is set to be our birth date.

Describe your sound in three words.

Dhenaldi: Unlike any other.

Dani: We – went – hard. Haha we definitely push our limits.

Fikrie: Catchy as f*ck

Nicko: Excellent party songs

Going digital: How was the reception when you released your first mini-album Commas in Period online? Would you do it again for subsequent albums?

Dani: We didn’t actually released the album online, we gave out free downloads for a couple of songs and sold over 1,700 copies in Indonesia, Australia, and other countries. It took us almost 2 years to finally post the EP online and not all of ’em are free to download. I’m not sure if we’re gonna release this album online cause we went really hard on that […], so we’re probably gonna stick to selling copies haha.

When is the best time to listen to your music?

Dhenaldi: You can actually listen to our songs anytime! In any moment.

Dani: Its best if you listen to it while you’re feeling lost or down or kinda sad — like you’ve lost your purpose in life and don’t know what to do, and death is the only way. Nah, I’m not really sure though haha.

What are your band’s influences?

Dani: The one and only, the main reason we’re making songs and go out to play shows. THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Yep, no objection from the other band members. Apart from that we do have our personal influences. Mine’s Jonny Craig.

Why should the Malaysian audience come to your gig?

Dani: IT’LL BE THE BEST GIG EVARRRRR!! Seriously the line-up is [mind-blowing] — we have Villes from Singapore; our good friends I,Revival who got signed by Zestone Records; and we’ve got plenty of tricks up our sleeves, we’re definitely gonna go hard on this show.

Nicko: This is our first show in Malaysia so yeah, you’d better be there.

Dhenaldi: This is one gig that’ll change your life forever, you’ll witness something you’ve never seen before. Three different countries with three different bands with their three different kind of awesomeness, and the tickets only cost RM30!

What’s on your playlist at the moment?

Dani: Blackbear mostly, City and Colour, Enter Shikari, Jonny Craig, and Tyler Carter. I’m a pretty mellow man actually haha.

Dhenaldi: Bring Me The Horizon’s Sempiternal, Linkin Park’s old stuff, SNSD.

Fikrie: Killswitch Engage, While She Sleeps, Bring Me The Horizon’s Sempiternal — amazing album.

Willfred: Trivium, The Devil Wears Prada.

Nicko: Counterparts, The Ghost Inside, Hans Zimmer, Meshuggah, Periphery.

Your band is fairly new but has already toured quite a bit. What’s in the future for the band?.

Dani: Yeah I guess we’re pretty lucky haha. Its been an amazing adventure for us as a band, meeting new faces, getting the chance to try different kinds of local foods. We’re currently writing our new stuff, and maybe we’ll tour some more. We’d love to tour South East Asia, Australia, and the US hopefully.
